Sophie the Hamster
1st March 2008 - 28th January 2010
Sadly, our poor little Sophie passed away late Wednesday evening/early Thursday morning, at the age of 1 year and (almost) 11 months. While Andy and I are both very upset that she's gone, we are at least thankful that she died peacefully in her sleep and also at quite a good age for a hamster.
Andy and I both agreed in recent weeks that hadn't been looking particularly healthy and was getting on a bit in life. She was spending most of her days sleeping, and most of her awake time was spent drinking lots of water, suggesting that she had become diabetic. Climbing tubes was proving difficult and so last week we downsized her house, plus she was having difficulty cleaning herself properly.
Still, we had a lot of good times with our little ball of fluff - she was a sweet, lovely hamster and a good friend. Here are some things that we'll remember about Sophie:
When we first brought her home in April 2008, Sophie used her wheel as a food store, no matter how much we tried to discourage her. Running in the wheel would cause bits of food and bedding to go all over the countertop.

She loved her maze unit, but Andy and I decided to take it away after she blocked herself in there a couple of times with bedding and we were worried that she wouldn't be able to get out for food and water!

Still, she coped without the maze and instead was able to sleep in the silliest of places, such as leaning her head over the tops of the tubes, with her face in a bowl of food, or buried so deep in the sawdust that she got sawdust head.

She was so tiny underneath all that fluff that she was able to sit in the food bowl while eating (and when the food bowl had been emptied, she would sit in there burrowing away at the bottom, as if there was more food hiding within/underneath the base).

She loved her food so much, especially honey sticks, which she was able to strip clean within 5 minutes! Cheese and lettuce were also favourites, and Sophie used to lick her lips after finishing these off. And monkey nuts - one time she got stuck as she didn't pouch the monkey nut and was trying to take it through the tube sideways on!

Exercise time was happily spent in her wheel, until this fell apart at 3am one morning and she escaped. Luckily, she found her way in Andy's and my bedroom (up 2 flights of stairs!), whereby Andy awoke to pattering noises followed by a *plop* as she was trying to climb up our duvet. We were able to put her into a carry case and then took her back to her house. The second exercise wheel she managed to crack within a week of getting it. We then tried to get one with a speedometer but with no success, so we gave up after that. Still, she enjoyed her hamster ball and Critter Cruiser very much.
She was a very lovable little thing - whenever she wanted a cuddle, she would go into her blue satellite and wait there patiently until we took her out.

And finally, she could be even squeakier than our guinea pigs!
We'll miss you, our silly fluffball.

Tell me what you thought of me this year, what I did that was good and what was bad.
Things you are happy about and things you are unhappy about, and why.
Perhaps recall a memorable occasion or remind me of something I shouldn't forget.
Tell me what you would like to do with me in 2008/9.
Once I have enough stuff, I'll collate the comments into a 'peer review', keeping all content anonymous, so you can see what you all think of me. I'll try and keep the bad as much as the good in there, but if anyone says anything too personal or mean or any secrets, I reserve the right to edit.
Edit: I've un-Friends Locked this post so that you can post anonymously if you want to.

grumpy
Andy's and my landline has decided that it's going to be grumpy. Whenever anyone tries to phone us, the caller ID comes up no problem, but when it gets picked up the noise coming through the earpiece sounds like a cross between a phone ringing and a drowning cat. And when we try to make a call, there isn't a dialing tone.
I completed a fault report on the BT website so they're looking into it and hopefully it'll be sorted out soon. I'll let everyone know when it's sorted but in the meantime, if you need to contact us, the mobiles are a good way to go!

pleased
Over the last couple of days, I've been having fun and bought myself a few pretty things, for a good bit of retail therapy!
Skydiving Hamsters shirt (in Black/White);
Purple shoes from Next;
a yellow dress from Jane Norman (which is short enough to also wear over jeans); and
Red iPod nano (to replace my old iPod Shuff).
evath has very kindly given me one of his spare 100GB hard drives for all the music storage, so I'll probably be spending a lot of this evening updating iTunes/sorting out music/singing my heart out.

Decision on a future pet

After some discussions with
evath about which pets we would like to get in the future, when we have more space (guinea pigs/cat/dog?), I have now decided that I would like a pet anteater.
