I saw this on steerpikelet's journal and am rather curious.

All comments are screened initially, but will be unscreened by discretion. Anonymous is on if you want to make use of it.

Tell me what you thought of me this year, what I did that was good and what was bad.

Andy's and my landline has decided that it's going to be grumpy. Whenever anyone tries to phone us, the caller ID comes up no problem, but when it gets picked up the noise coming through the earpiece sounds like a cross between a phone ringing and a drowning cat. And when we try to make a call, there isn't a dialing tone.

I completed a fault report on the BT website so they're looking into it and hopefully it'll be sorted out soon. I'll let everyone know when it's sorted but in the meantime, if you need to contact us, the mobiles are a good way to go!

Over the last couple of days, I've been having fun and bought myself a few pretty things, for a good bit of retail therapy!

Skydiving Hamsters shirt (in Black/White);
Purple shoes from Next;
a yellow dress from Jane Norman (which is short enough to also wear over jeans); and
Red iPod nano (to replace my old iPod Shuff).

evath has very kindly given me one of his spare 100GB hard drives for all the music storage, so I'll probably be spending a lot of this evening updating iTunes/sorting out music/singing my heart out.

Sophie update

Having spent the last few days at home with a stomach bug, I'm feeling rather bored now. (Well, I started to get really bored after about 2 hours on the first day I spent at home.) I've been kicked out of the bedroom since my temperature has been making me toss and turn lots at night, and it's been keeping Andy awake.

So, I've been sleeping in the "spare room" (aka the living room, where we have a single bed instead of a sofa at the moment), the room in which we also kept Sophie. The little ball of fluff and I have spent quite a bit of time together over the last few days - maybe she could tell that I was in the room and she was trying to get my attention, or maybe I'm looking too much into it, but recently she's started to gnaw on the little bars of her cage, and when I walk up towards her she runs to the area where I take her out from. She's been doing this a lot lately (including the last few evenings, which hasn't really bothered me when it's late because I haven't really been able to sleep anyway).

Plus, now she's been moved back down to the ground floor again, next to my computer, so she can keep me company!

As a result, we've been spending a lot of time together recently, with much handling and feeding and general fun stuff, and more of her unique personality is starting to become apparent. It feels more like she's my little fluffy friend, which makes me happy!

Today, to keep me occupied, I did a bit of image fiddling on one of my favourite piccies of Sophie:

I think Sophie would make a good Jedi Knight.

Edit: Just gone over some previous LJ posts:
(1) I never realised how old Jeremy really looked until now.
(2) After he escaped from his cage, Andy and I guessed that one of the reasons he came to our room at 6am was that he wanted to see the cute picture of the hamster on the calendar. I think Jeremy would have liked Sophie.

Problem-solving

After Andy and I came back home this evening, having gone out for dinner and then on to see the new Indiana Jones film, we found Sophie trying to do a bit of problem-solving:

Problem: How do you fit a stick of food (like on an ice cream stick) from the top level of a maze to the bottom, and then through a small pipe system?

Solution: Bite off a majority of the food so that the stick is smaller and pull with your teeth as hard as you can.

New house for everyone

Sophie has a new house. Now, when I look over, firstly I won't expect to see Jeremy, and secondly I consider this to be Sophie's house.

(Note: The hamster has not been photoshopped in.)

Also, not exactly the most in-focus picture but she obviously seems to be happy and comfortable in her top room, observed when she feel asleep with her face in the food, and her using quieter wheel = more sleep for me.

Also today:

* Ball dress - *tick*.
* Thanks to cjholding for helping Andy to move the TV unit upstairs today. We now have a lovely dining table downstairs, with added fruit bowl for extra decoration.

Weekly update of stuff

Phew, so glad it's Friday! This weekend, I'm hoping to go shopping with Andy to find a dress for the St John's College Ball in June. I was rather amused (and feel somewhat geeky that I found it amusing) that there's a ball dress shop in Cambridge called The Frock Exchange.

Another week of work is done. The studying is going alright, although I decided following the passing of Jeremy etc. that I needed a break. Now, though, I'm one third of the way through my 450-odd page book. My course is scheduled for the end of July/beginning of August and, similarly to the previous one, I'm hoping to take the exam pretty soon after that.

Sophie is continuing to settle down, although she still has her moments where she gets very jumpy. Earlier, she almost managed to escape from the big blue plastic box - she jumped really high when Andy and I tried giving her an unfamiliar object in the form of a tomato, which then unexpectedly rolled into her tummy. But anyway, she hasn't nipped us for a whole week, and is now eating food from my hand (I've also learnt that she *loves* lettuce, a useful thing to know when I want to treat her for good behaviour). Handling is still a problem - as soon as you try picking her up, she bounces out of reach rather similarly to what I think looks like a mini reindeer, but once you get her in your hand she's not too bad. I'm able to move her from her cage to the plastic box and back again by picking her up, so she's doing well.

What the house looks like at the moment

I've now set up my desktop computer, so here are photos showing what the house looks like at the moment. Still some work to be done on the new living room and dining/sitting room, but Andy and I aren't going to rush it.

New bedroom (top floor)

There's a whole bunch of stuff that we're probably going to end up putting into large plastic bags and storing in the shed, like a couple of bedside cabinets and a broken chair. In its place, we're going to put the TV unit, which is currently still on the ground floor.

New dining/sitting room (ground floor)

The TV unit is going to go into the new living room. The dining table will be put in place of that.
